Community Bank Investments School

May 19 - 23, 2019
University of Colorado Denver
Denver, CO

This four-and-a-half day school equips financial managers of community banks with strategies to effectively and independently manage an investment portfolio. It is a re-designed extension of the Graduate School of Bank Investments & Financial Management, formerly held at the University of South Carolina. Visit GSBColorado.org for further details and registration information.

Overview

The Graduate School of Banking at Colorado’s Community Bank Investments School is designed to provide financial managers with an independent critique of opportunities and risks in better managing a community bank investment portfolio. Participants attend sessions at the University of Colorado Denver Business School, and apply classroom concepts to their own institution’s investment portfolio. This program is not affiliated with any single brokerage firm or bank investment/trading strategy.

Curriculum

Hands-On Training

Faculty members use live information from Bloomberg to explain key concepts and examine specific investment instruments. Students receive hands-on Bloomberg training and are encouraged to bring information regarding their own institution’s investment portfolio. As part of a group, instructors will assist in analyzing different securities’ risk and return characteristics and the potential impact on a portfolio’s overall risk/return profile.

Learning Objectives

  • Provide an introduction to basic bond math (different measures of yield, total return, duration, convexity, option-adjusted spread, etc.)
  • Demonstrate the implications of yield curves and forward rates for making portfolio decisions
  • Describe the basic risk and return features of different securities (Treasuries, Agencies, Mortgage-backed pass-throughs, CMOs, Municipals, SBA instruments, Corporates and Asset-backed securities)
  • Demonstrate how each of these securities might fit into a bank’s investment portfolio given management’s risk tolerance and income expectations
  • Describe different basic portfolio strategies that most community banks follow
